Gray AAF (Joint Base Lewis-McChord) Airport Runway Diagram Print

Gray AAF is a one runway field, and the print is built around that single stroke: runway 15/33, 6,124 feet long and 150 feet wide, asphalt, laid diagonally from the upper left down to the lower right of the sheet. The ground sits at 301 feet above sea level. Around the strip, taxiways loop out to broad ramps on both sides, with hangar and building footprints stacked along the eastern edge and a scatter of smaller structures trailing off to the southwest. One dark line, a lot of pale apron: that contrast is the whole composition.

The airfield sits inside the Fort Lewis portion of Joint Base Lewis-McChord, near Tacoma in Pierce County, Washington. It is named in honor of Captain Hawthorne C. Gray, an Army balloon and stratospheric flight pioneer who died on a free balloon flight launched from Scott Field, Belleville, Illinois, in 1927. Flying here goes back further than the pavement does: in 1921 Curtiss JN-4 Jenny biplanes flew from the Naval Station at Sand Point in Seattle to a grass field at what was then Camp Lewis, just west of today's Gray AAF. The paved runways arrived with a 1938 public works project, and the field took the Gray Army Airfield name that same year.
