Chicago O'Hare International Airport Runway Diagram Print

Chicago O'Hare International has eight runways. On the print they read as two ideas at once, a bank of long parallel strips laid east to west and a pair of runways set on the diagonal that cut across them.

Six of the eight runways run parallel, grouped into two banks that frame the terminal core at the center of the field. Three sit toward the top, counting from 9L/27R down through 9C/27C and 9R/27L, and three run along the bottom as 10L/28R, 10C/28C, and 10R/28L. The two that remain, 04L/22R and 04R/22L, angle across the layout on a northeast to southwest line, the shorter pair whose slant gives the drawing its cross-hatched signature. The longest strip of all reaches 13,000 feet.

The field began in World War II as Orchard Place, an airfield beside a Douglas plant that turned out C-54 transports, which is why its code, ORD, still has nothing to do with the O'Hare name it took in 1949 for Navy aviator Edward Butch O'Hare.
