How to read an airport diagram

A field guide to runway numbering, dimensions, and layout

An airport diagram is an overhead map of a field's runways and taxiways, drawn to scale, like the official charts published for pilots. Once you know a few conventions, you can read the basic shape of an airport at a glance. Here is how.

What an airport diagram shows

Official airport diagrams use a top-down, drawn-to-scale view of paved surfaces. They identify runways, taxiways, ramps, markings, and labels so pilots can orient themselves on the field. The chart scale shows relative runway lengths and crossing angles, while fine details can vary by chart and may be simplified. Strip away the color and the clutter and what remains is a clean piece of geometry that is different at every airport.

How runways are numbered

Every runway is named for the direction it points. Take the runway's magnetic compass heading, round it to the nearest ten degrees, and drop the final zero. A runway pointing close to 280 degrees becomes runway 28. One pointing due north, 360 degrees, becomes runway 36. One pointing roughly east, 090 degrees, becomes runway 9 (single-digit headings keep a leading character only when written in full).

This is why you never see a runway numbered higher than 36: the compass only goes to 360 degrees, and the last zero is always dropped. The number is a direction, not a name someone chose.

Why each runway has two numbers

A runway is a single strip of pavement that aircraft use from both ends, depending on the wind. Read from one end it points one way; read from the other end it points exactly 180 degrees opposite. So every runway carries two numbers, one at each end, and they always differ by 18.

  • Runway 10/28 points about 100 degrees from one end and 280 degrees from the other.
  • Runway 18/36 runs almost due north and south.
  • Runway 05/23 runs roughly northeast to southwest.

On a diagram you will see both numbers, one painted at each threshold. The pair tells you the runway's orientation without any other reference.

What L, C, and R mean

When an airport has two or three parallel runways pointing the same direction, a single number would be ambiguous, so each gets a letter for its position: L for left, R for right, and C for center, as seen by a pilot approaching from that direction.

That is why a busy field might show 10L/28R and 10R/28L side by side. Notice how the letters flip between the two ends: the runway that is on the left as you approach from one direction is on the right as you approach from the other. Diagrams of major hubs are full of these parallel pairs.

Runway lengths and widths

Each runway has a length and a width, given in feet, and a diagram is drawn so those proportions are accurate. Length matters because larger aircraft need more room: a long-haul runway can stretch well past 10,000 feet, while a small general-aviation strip might be 2,500 feet or less. Width is usually 75 to 200 feet. When you see one long, wide runway and a couple of shorter ones, you are looking at the difference between a field that handles heavy jets and one built mostly for light aircraft.

Taxiways, thresholds, and markings

The thinner paved paths threading between the runways are taxiways, the routes aircraft use to move between the runway and the terminal or ramp. The bold markings at the end of a runway are the threshold, the start of the usable landing surface, and the dashed line down the middle is the centerline. Together these are the visual language of every field, and they are part of what makes a diagram read as a real working place rather than an abstract shape.

Why every field looks different

No two airports share a layout, because each one is shaped by where it sits. A coastal field aligns its runways with the prevailing wind off the water. A mountain airport bends its single strip to fit the only flat ground in the valley. A major hub crosses several parallel runways to move traffic in two directions at once. Read enough diagrams and you start to recognize fields by their geometry alone, the way you would recognize a coastline.
