Dupage Airport Runway Diagram Print

DuPage Airport works four runways, and the diagram is built around the two that dominate it: 2L/20R at 7,571 by 150 feet and its shorter partner 2R/20L at 6,451 by 100 feet, a pair of near-parallel concrete strips running north-northeast to south-southwest down the length of the plate. Runway 10/28, 4,750 by 75 feet, cuts across the longer of the two close to its north end, and 15/33, 3,399 by 100 feet, sits off by itself on a northwest-to-southeast diagonal in the upper right corner with apron and buildings packed around it. Field elevation is 759 feet above sea level and magnetic variation is 1W, so the plotted headings sit close to true north.

The land was sheep pasture until 1927, when two Chicago entrepreneurs bought it and began barnstorming off a grass strip. The Navy requisitioned the field in 1941, put up brick hangars and paved two runways in an X, and the airport was formally activated in March 1943. A year after the Navy arrived, the Howard Aircraft Corporation opened a factory across the road to the east and built more than 500 trainer, transport and air ambulance aircraft, with employees pushing airframes over the road to test fly them. The Navy sold the field to DuPage County in 1946 for a nominal sum, and the county answered the postwar boom with an east-west runway and a five-story control tower. The brick hangars and that original X survived, though one leg of it was closed and became taxiway C.

DuPage was designated a reliever airport for general aviation in the late 1970s, and the county spent the years after buying room around it, taking the airport from 900 acres in 1985 to 2,800 acres by 1992, much of that a buffer zone. In 2022 the field recorded 135,932 aircraft operations and 236 based aircraft. On the wall it reads as geometry rather than as traffic. Runway designators, lengths and widths follow the published figures, taxiways and apron edges are reduced to flat geometry, and the ground tone you choose carries the whole field. Set beside the diagram of another Illinois field such as Peoria's, this one looks like what it is: four runways at three angles, long hangar rows along the northwest edge, and a semicircular apron cut into the west side instead of a row of gates.
