General Downing - Peoria International Airport Runway Diagram Print

General Downing - Peoria International (PIA) runs on two crossing runways: 13/31 at 10,104 by 150 feet and 04/22 at 8,004 by 150 feet, on a field 661 feet above sea level about five miles west of downtown Peoria, Illinois. Their headings sit close to a right angle, 129 magnetic against 041, so the layout resolves into a wide X on the page rather than the parallel bars a larger hub would give you. That geometry is what makes the field work as art: one dominant concrete stroke, one shorter asphalt stroke across it, and the taxiway network threaded between them.

The airport carries the name of General Wayne A. Downing, a four star U.S. Army general born in Peoria who commanded U.S. Special Operations Command. The Metropolitan Airport Authority of Peoria voted on September 24, 2008 to rename what had been the Greater Peoria Regional Airport, and the dedication followed on October 10, 2008. The field itself is far older than the name. Peoria residents voted to build it on May 19, 1932, on 195 acres bought by 261 local businessmen, and the first surfaces were four shale runways. Before any of that existed, Charles Lindbergh made stops in the Peoria area flying the airmail route between St. Louis and Chicago, off a grass strip rather than a laid out airport.

As of 2026 the field is shared with the Peoria Air National Guard Base, home to the 182d Airlift Wing and its C-130H Hercules transports, and with an Illinois Army National Guard aviation unit flying CH-47 Chinook helicopters, which is part of why the property covers 3,800 acres.
