Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport works two runways now, and this print plots both to scale from the published runway data. Runway 04/22 is the longer at 8,001 feet by 150 feet, laid in concrete, with 13/31 at 7,399 feet and the same 150-foot width, in asphalt. They are close enough in length that neither one takes over, so the drawing gets a balanced pair of long lines instead of one dominant strip and a stub. The word now is doing work in that first sentence. When the field was dedicated in November 1947 as Capital Airport it had three runways of 5,300 feet, a service apron, a temporary terminal, and T-hangars for 38 aircraft. It got built at all because American Airlines and Chicago and Southern Airlines had dropped Springfield in 1938 and 1939 over the condition of the older field, and construction that started soon after was held up by the war. A third runway, 18/36, lasted into this century and came out in 2022, the year after the airport began work on a new crosswind runway. This layout is a recent shape, which is not something you can say about most airport diagrams.

SPI is a civil-military field about three miles northwest of downtown Springfield, in Sangamon County, Illinois, spread over 2,300 acres. Two Illinois National Guard units moved onto the property in 1946, and one of them is still there. As of 2026, Capital Airport Air National Guard Station, 91 acres leased from the airport authority, is home to an Illinois Air National Guard wing. That shows up in the traffic mix: of the 25,915 aircraft operations logged in the year ending July 2022, 20 percent were military and 64 percent general aviation. On the passenger side, between March 2025 and February 2026 the heaviest route out of Springfield ran to Chicago O'Hare, with Florida leisure destinations behind it. Ozark Airlines used to work this field with DC-9s to St. Louis and Chicago, and Air Illinois flew from here to Meigs Field on the Chicago lakefront before it closed.
