North AF Aux Airport Runway Diagram Print

North AF Aux (XNO) is a military airfield about three miles east of the town of North, South Carolina, and on a wall it reads as two dark diagonals climbing from lower left to upper right. The main strip, 06/24, is 10,003 feet long and 150 feet wide, asphalt. The second, 051/231, is 3,500 feet by 90 feet of concrete, set below the main runway at a slightly shallower angle. The two converge toward the northeast without ever crossing, and that near miss is what gives the composition its tension: a long wedge of empty paper held open between two lines that almost touch.

The field has been working since the Second World War. In 1943 the original dirt runway went in, and North served as a satellite airfield of Columbia Army Air Base, supporting B-25 Mitchell medium bomber training. Since 1979 the 437th Airlift Wing at Charleston AFB has held real property jurisdiction over North Field. A control tower and a permanent aircraft rescue and firefighting station were added later, though the tower is not normally staffed. None of that shows up as a caption on the print; it shows up as a field laid out for heavy aircraft and very little else.

The property covers 2,400 acres, roughly 1,150 of them undeveloped, and that ratio is what you get on the sheet: a lot of quiet ground around a little pavement. Taxiways close the gap between the runways in a long triangle, with a ramp and an apron loop off to the east. The 06 threshold sits low and left, and the eye runs the whole length of the asphalt up to 24 before it stops. Whatever colorway you choose, the geometry carries the piece, and it hangs well in a hallway, a study or an office where a single strong angle does more work than a busy image would.
