Shaw AFB Runway Diagram Print

Shaw AFB draws as two long parallel diagonals: runway 04L/22R at 10,014 feet by 150 feet, and runway 04R/22L at 8,014 feet by 150 feet, both concrete. In the print they run corner to corner, southwest to northeast, close enough together to read as a matched pair and offset enough that the shorter strip sits down and to the right of the longer one. Field elevation is 241 feet, printed in the caption block with the coordinates and the identifier.

The base is named for First Lieutenant Ervin David Shaw, a Sumter County native and one of the first Americans to fly combat missions in World War I. Shaw Field was activated in 1941 as a basic flying school for air cadets. The field has been under Air Combat Command since 1992. In 1994 the 20th Fighter Wing became the host unit. In 2011 Third Army dedicated its headquarters building on the base.

As artwork, the appeal is the rhythm of the two strips against the pale apron that feeds them. A ladder of hangars and parking stubs lines the northwest side of the long runway, taxiways loop back at both ends, and a small angular pad cluster anchors the bottom of the frame near the 4R threshold. The drawing is rendered flat, with no shading and no clutter, so it reads as graphic design from across the room and as an airfield up close. Hung as a pair with a print from Columbia, it sets a working fighter base beside a civil field about an hour west.
