Florence Regional Airport Runway Diagram Print

Florence Regional plots as a cross. Runway 09/27 runs 6,502 feet across the sheet, runway 01/19 runs 6,000 feet from top to bottom, and the two meet near the middle of both at close to a right angle. Each is 150 feet wide, so the pair reads as two black bars of matched weight instead of one dominant strip with a stub beside it. The 09/27 bar tilts up very slightly toward the 27 end, which keeps the whole composition from sitting perfectly square inside the frame.

The field dates to a land purchase in 1928. During World War II it operated as Florence Army Airfield, where the 52d Pursuit Group trained on P-39 Airacobras and P-40 Warhawks before departing in 1942 for Wilmington, North Carolina, and where A-20 Havoc bomber crews later went through replacement training. The property returned to the City of Florence in 1945. Eastern Airlines served FLO from 1948 to 1965, Piedmont Airlines flights ended in 1981, and operation passed to the Pee Dee Regional Airport Authority in 1999. Florence also housed the Florence Air and Missile Museum until 1997, when the collection was split among other museums.
