Fine Art Print: 8 x 10, 16 x 20, and 24 x 30 inches.

Made like something you keep.

The field itself

This is Columbia's own layout, the way its runways run and the taxiways thread between them, composed into a print you will want to look at every day. Not a stock template with a new name on it.

Museum-quality cotton paper

Heavyweight 330 gsm, 100% cotton Hot Press paper, acid-free and archival-grade. Its high color gamut and black density give the runways real depth, and pigment inks keep the fine detail crisp on a smooth matte surface.

Solid wood framing or glossy metal

Frame it in 1.25 inch solid wood, black, white or natural oak, with the white beveled mat, optical-grade clear acrylic and hanging wire included. Or choose glossy metal: dye sublimation into aluminum, floated about 3/4 inch off the wall on a hidden mount.

Columbia Metro Airport Runway Diagram Print

Columbia Metro draws as a long, lopsided X. Runway 11/29 runs 8601 feet on a shallow diagonal across the upper half of the sheet, and runway 05/23 climbs 8001 feet from the lower left corner to meet it, the two crossing close to the 29 threshold on the eastern side of the field. Both are 150 feet wide, and the published surface for 11/29 is concrete while 05/23 is listed as an asphalt and concrete mix. Field elevation is 236 feet, set in small type under the identifier.

What makes the composition work on a wall is the imbalance. The crossing point sits well off to one side rather than in the middle, so the shorter runway reads as a long stroke swinging up to catch the longer one instead of a tidy symmetrical cross. Above the 11/29 centerline, the terminal apron and its taxiway grid fill in as a pale band of rectangles and connectors, and the ramp and buildings east of the intersection give the heavy side of the X something to lean against. Two black bars and a lot of quiet ground: the drawing holds its shape from across a room and rewards a closer look at the taxiway connectors.

The identifier block, the coordinates and the elevation sit low and right, which leaves the field floating with room around it in whichever colorway you choose. If you are assembling a Carolinas wall, Charlotte and Charleston are drawn in the same series and hang beside this one without fighting it.

Columbia (CAE) print, common questions

How many runways does Columbia Metro have, and how long are they?

Two. Runway 11/29 is 8601 feet long and runway 05/23 is 8001 feet long, and both are 150 feet wide. They cross near the eastern side of the field, which is the X shape on the print.

What does CAE stand for?

CAE is the three letter identifier for Columbia Metro in Columbia, South Carolina, and it is the code set in large type at the bottom of the artwork. The longer four letter form for the same field is KCAE.

What is the field elevation at CAE?

236 feet. It is printed under the city line along with the coordinates, 33.9388 degrees north and 81.1195 degrees west.

How accurate is the airport map print?

The runways, taxiways, aprons and building footprints are plotted from published airport information, with runway numbers matching the published designators. It is artwork rather than a navigation document, so fine details may be simplified or omitted. Pavement markings, lighting and signage are examples of what gets pared back for legibility at wall scale.

What formats does this come in?

Fine Art Print, Framed Fine Art Print, Glossy Metal Print and Digital Download, in a range of sizes. Physical pieces are made to order; the digital option is a file you download. Specifications for the finish you pick are listed with that option.

Is this a good gift for someone connected to Columbia?

It works well for pilots who have flown into CAE, for anyone who lived or worked near the field, and for travelers with a Columbia story. The crossing runway layout is recognizable to people who know the airport, and the identifier and coordinates make it clear to people who do not.
