Whidbey Island NAS (Ault Field) Runway Diagram Print

Two feet of length separate them, which is close enough that the eye reads a matched pair rather than a main strip and a secondary one. The 07/25 line runs nearly flat across the page while 14/32 cuts down from upper left to lower right, so the crossing lands off center and leaves a wide, quiet field of paper in the upper right corner.

Ault Field is the main portion of Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, a Navy station near Oak Harbor on Whidbey Island in Island County, Washington. Construction began in 1942, and the station was commissioned as a Navy facility that same year. In 1943 the land plane field was named Ault Field for Commander William B. Ault, lost in action at the Battle of the Coral Sea the year before. In 1970 the Navy's first EA-6B Prowler squadron was designated at Whidbey Island. None of that history is printed on the sheet, but the layout carries it: two long, wide, evenly matched strips are what a training and operations field for heavy aircraft looks like from above.
