Inyokern Airport Runway Diagram Print

Inyokern has three asphalt runways, and the print plots all three of them as one closed shape. Runway 15/33 runs down the left side at 7,100 by 75 feet, the longest pavement on the field. Runway 02/20 climbs from the lower left to the upper right at 6,275 by 75 feet, and the two cross low in the frame, so both leave short tails below the intersection and read as a hard X. Runway 10/28, at 4,150 by 75 feet, closes the top edge between them. The corners nearly touch without quite meeting, which is what turns the layout into a tall, leaning triangle instead of a tidy geometric one.

The field carries more history than its outline suggests. The airstrip was built as an emergency landing field in 1935, and in 1944 the US Navy opened it as Harvey Field, named for Lieutenant Commander Warren W. Harvey and his work on aviation ordnance. Harvey Field closed in 1946. In 1968, Air West was operating Fairchild F-27 turboprops from Inyokern to Los Angeles International Airport. The elevation line under the identifier block, 2,457 feet above mean sea level, is the other number worth a second look.

The Inyokern Airport Dragstrip opened in 1954, and it closed in 2005. Since then the pavement has done camera duty: shots for a Lexus commercial feature the car rolling down runway 20, and Top Gun: Maverick used the hangar facility for scenes with Tom Cruise working on a vintage aircraft. On a wall, the artwork keeps all of that implied rather than captioned. Taxiways and apron shapes sit back in a quiet gray while the three runways hold the ink, so from across a room you see the wedge and the crossing, and up close you find the designators 15, 33, 02, 20, 10 and 28 set into the ends.
