Edwards AFB Runway Diagram Print

Edwards AFB (EDW) reads as two long parallel bars cutting a diagonal across a wide, quiet page. The lower and heavier of the two is 05R/23L, 15,024 feet by 300 feet of concrete, the longest runway on the field. Just above it and slightly shorter sits 05L/23R, 12,000 feet by 200 feet of asphalt. The field's third runway, 07/25 at 8,000 feet by 50 feet, is not drawn in this print. What fills the rest of the composition is the pale infrastructure: a ramp and apron mass along the northwest side of the pair, and a thin spine of taxiway and roadway that wanders north for most of the sheet's height before it thins out to nothing.

The place behind the drawing is a flight test field. Established in the 1930s as Muroc Field, it was renamed in 1950 for World War II test pilot Capt. Glen Edwards. In 1947 Chuck Yeager flew the Bell X-1 past the speed of sound here, and in 1951 the Air Force Test Pilot School moved to Edwards from Wright Field in Ohio. The base sits next to Rogers Dry Lake, a hard salt pan that forms a natural extension to the runways and is itself a National Historic Landmark. Edwards took the first Space Shuttle landing and stayed the primary orbiter landing area until 1991, helped by its lakebeds and its nearness to Plant 42 at Palmdale, where shuttles were serviced before relaunch.
