Materials

Fine Art Print: pigment giclée printing on heavyweight 330 gsm (17 mil), 100% cotton Hot Press paper, on regularly calibrated giclée printers. The paper is acid-free and archival-grade, with a smooth matte surface and the high color gamut and black density that let a dark ground and fine linework keep their depth. Supplied unframed, with no added white margin, ready for your own frame.

Dimensions

Fine Art Print: 8 x 10, 16 x 20, and 24 x 30 inches.

Made like something you keep.

The field itself

This is Mojave's own layout, the way its runways run and the taxiways thread between them, composed into a print you will want to look at every day. Not a stock template with a new name on it.

Museum-quality cotton paper

Heavyweight 330 gsm, 100% cotton Hot Press paper, acid-free and archival-grade. Its high color gamut and black density give the runways real depth, and pigment inks keep the fine detail crisp on a smooth matte surface.

Solid wood framing or glossy metal

Frame it in 1.25 inch solid wood, black, white or natural oak, with the white beveled mat, optical-grade clear acrylic and hanging wire included. Or choose glossy metal: dye sublimation into aluminum, floated about 3/4 inch off the wall on a hidden mount.

Mojave Air & Space Port/Rutan Field Runway Diagram Print

Mojave Air and Space Port sits at 2,801 feet in the high desert of Mojave, California, and its three runways cross rather than run in parallel. The long 12/30 strip, 12,503 feet of it, cuts diagonally from the upper corner of the field down to the lower one and dominates the diagram. The 7,049-foot 08/26 runs almost straight across it, and the shorter 04/22 slices over the top, so all three meet toward the upper end of the field. We plot that geometry to scale from the airport's actual layout, weight the longest runway so the eye lands on it first, and let the crossing pattern and the taxiways and ramp read as clean lines against the ground tone you choose.

Flight test work has centered here since the early 1970s, drawn by the empty terrain and the restricted airspace next door, and the airport is home to the National Test Pilot School and to Scaled Composites. On June 17, 2004 it became the first facility in the United States licensed for horizontal launches of reusable spacecraft. Days later, on June 21, 2004, Scaled Composites' SpaceShipOne launched from Mojave and made the first privately funded human flight to space, going on to win the Ansari X Prize that autumn. The diagram sets that history down as the plain shape of a working airfield.

The other thing Mojave is known for is metal. The vast acreage and dry desert air make it a long-term parking and reclamation site for retired jetliners, and wide-body Boeing, Airbus, McDonnell Douglas, and Lockheed aircraft from major carriers sit out here, some refurbished and flown again, others cut up for parts. Scheduled service was always thin: from 1974 to 1979 Golden West Airlines ran Twin Otters direct to Los Angeles, and little since. In 2022 the field added Rutan Field to its name for the aviation pioneers who did so much of their work here. Rendered as a print, that whole story reduces to three crossing runways in the sand, which is what makes it worth the wall.

Mojave (MHV) print, common questions

How many runways does Mojave Air and Space Port have?

Three, and they cross rather than run parallel: 12/30, 08/26, and 04/22. The print shows all three and the intersections between them, plotted to scale from the real field.

What is the longest runway at MHV?

Runway 12/30 is the longest at 12,503 feet, 200 feet wide. It runs diagonally across the field and is the dominant line in the diagram.

Where is Mojave Air and Space Port, and what does MHV mean?

MHV is the code for Mojave Air and Space Port, in the high desert town of Mojave, California, at an elevation of 2,801 feet. The print carries the coordinates and elevation under the identifier.

Why is Mojave famous?

It is a center for flight testing and commercial spaceflight and the first US site licensed for horizontal launches of reusable spacecraft. SpaceShipOne made the first privately funded human spaceflight from here in 2004. The field is also a well-known storage and reclamation yard for retired airliners.

How does the MHV print relate to the airport's layout?

Published airport information and available field depictions guide the MHV composition, including the runway designators and relative geometry. It is original wall art, so fine details may be simplified or omitted.

Does this make a good gift for a pilot or space enthusiast?

It suits anyone with a tie to Mojave or to experimental flight. Each piece is made to order in your chosen size, finish, and ground tone, with free US shipping.
