Tuscaloosa National Airport Runway Diagram Print

Tuscaloosa National puts two asphalt runways on the sheet, and they never touch. Runway 4/22 measures 6,498 by 150 feet and cuts from the lower left up toward the right, filling most of the page on its own. The shorter 12/30, 4,000 by 100 feet, sits across the top and slopes gently down to the right. Their ends stop just short of each other near the upper right, so the pair reads as a wide open V pushed off center, which gives the composition more tension on a wall than a single straight strip ever manages.

The field opened in 1940 as Van De Graaff Field with turf runways, and during World War II it worked as an Army Air Forces primary pilot training field, flying mostly Fairchild PT-19s. The paved northeast to southwest strip, 4/22, came in 1970 along with a passenger terminal to bring in jet service, and it is still the long bar that anchors this print. Runway 4 carries an Instrument Landing System and approach lights.

Scheduled airline service started in 1949 on a 25-seat Douglas DC-3, as one of the original six destinations served by Southern Airways. Republic pulled out in 1984, with most passengers drawn away to nearby Birmingham, and no airline has served Tuscaloosa on a scheduled basis since 1997. In 2017 the airport counted 2,400 commercial passenger boardings, most of them athletic charters from the University of Alabama. The city, which owns and operates the field, changed the name from Tuscaloosa Regional to Tuscaloosa National in 2019.
