Kelly Field Runway Diagram Print

Kelly Field works from a single runway, 16/34, 11,550 feet long and 150 feet wide on a concrete surface, and the print hands that strip almost the full height of the sheet. It is drawn as one dark bar leaning a few degrees off vertical, marked 16 at the top and 34 at the bottom, with nothing crossing it anywhere along its run. The pale gray around it is taxiway and apron: a spine of parallel taxiways down the east side, a looser branch reaching west, and a dense block of ramp and hangar shapes at the lower right.

The field is named for George Edward Maurice Kelly, the first member of the U.S. military killed in the crash of an airplane he was piloting. It started in 1917 as one of thirty-two Air Service training camps set up after the United States entered World War I, and it worked as a flying field, a primary flying school and a mechanics school. Charles Lindbergh graduated from its Advanced Flying School in 1925. In 2001, under BRAC action, the former runway and the land west of it became Kelly Field, and control of the reduced installation passed to the adjacent Lackland Air Force Base, part of Joint Base San Antonio.

As art, the appeal is the contrast between that one uninterrupted line and the busy gray sprawl pushed to one side of it. There is no X, no V, no second strip to balance the composition, so the eye follows the runway end to end and then wanders into the ramp shapes.
