Felts Field Runway Diagram Print

Felts Field runs two parallel runways: 04L/22R at 4,499 by 140 feet of concrete, and 04R/22L at 2,650 by 75 feet of asphalt. In the print they read as two dark diagonals climbing from the lower left toward the upper right at the same angle, the long one outboard, the short one set inside it and starting well up the diagonal. Everything built is pushed to the right of the frame: apron, connecting taxiways, and dense rows of hangars stepping toward the corner. Field elevation is 1,957 feet, and the field covers 416 acres.

The history is older than most fields this size. Aviation activity began at the site in 1913, when it was the Parkwater airstrip, and Spokane designated it a municipal flying field in 1920 at the instigation of the Chamber of Commerce. In 1926 the Department of Commerce recognized Parkwater as an airport, one of the first in the West. In 1927, during the National Air Races the field hosted, it was renamed for James Buell Felts, a Washington Air National Guard aviator killed in a crash that year.

In 1946 the airlines, Northwest and United, moved west to Geiger Field, later Spokane International Airport. What stayed behind is the field you see here. The four-story control tower went up in 1967, the runways were formerly numbered 3/21, and in 1991 the site was listed as the Felts Field Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places. A museum in the hangar facilities opened to the public in 2019.

As art the layout is calm and confident: two hard bars at a shared heading, a wide sweep of open ground, and a busy grey texture of buildings holding down one corner. That asymmetry is what makes it work on a wall, because the eye follows the runways up and out of the frame instead of stopping in the middle. It hangs well on its own over a desk and just as well beside a Coeur d'Alene print in a small regional group. The colorway you choose sets how loud it plays.
