The field itself

This is Spokane's own layout, the way its runways run and the taxiways thread between them, composed into a print you will want to look at every day. Not a stock template with a new name on it.

Museum-quality cotton paper

Heavyweight 330 gsm, 100% cotton Hot Press paper, acid-free and archival-grade. Its high color gamut and black density give the runways real depth, and pigment inks keep the fine detail crisp on a smooth matte surface.

Solid wood framing or glossy metal

Frame it in 1.25 inch solid wood, black, white or natural oak, with the white beveled mat, optical-grade clear acrylic and hanging wire included. Or choose glossy metal: dye sublimation into aluminum, floated about 3/4 inch off the wall on a hidden mount.

Spokane International Airport Runway Diagram Print

Spokane International draws as an X. Runway 3/21 runs corner to corner across the sheet, lower left to upper right, at 11,002 by 150 feet of asphalt and concrete. Runway 8/26 lies close to level, 8,199 by 150 feet of asphalt, and the two cross well left of center so the diagonal carries most of the visual weight. Field elevation is 2,385 feet, printed small under the identifier.

The letters have a story behind them: GEG comes from the field's former name, Geiger Field, which honored Major Harold Geiger. Known as Sunset Field before 1941, it became Spokane's municipal airport in 1946 and took its present name in 1960. Runway 3/21 was lengthened in 2010 along with parallel taxiways A and G, which is part of why that diagonal reads so long here. Around the field sits the Inland Northwest, a 30-county region taking in Spokane and Coeur d'Alene, and the airport itself sits about seven miles west-southwest of downtown Spokane.

As art, the crossing is the whole composition. Gray apron and building shapes gather along the northwest side of the long diagonal, then thin out toward the open ends, so the runways stay the darkest marks on the paper. It hangs well over a desk or in a hallway where someone will stop and trace the two strokes to their labeled ends. Sizes run from small to statement scale, and the colorway you choose sets whether the field reads quiet or graphic.

Spokane (GEG) print, common questions

How many runways does Spokane International have, and how long are they?

Two. Runway 3/21 is 11,002 by 150 feet, asphalt and concrete. Runway 8/26 is 8,199 by 150 feet, asphalt. Both appear in the print, crossing in an X with the longer strip on the diagonal.

What does the code GEG mean?

It comes from the airport's former name, Geiger Field, named for Major Harold Geiger. The field became Spokane's municipal airport in 1946 and received its present name in 1960, but the three letters stayed.

Where is the airport, and how high is the field?

Spokane, Washington, roughly seven miles west-southwest of downtown Spokane. Field elevation is 2,385 feet, which is printed on the sheet beneath the coordinates.

What sizes can I get?

Several sizes, from a small desk-side piece to a large wall statement, in the colorway you choose. Every print is made to order and ships free within the US.

How accurate is the layout to the published airport information?

The runways are plotted from published runway data, so 3/21 and 8/26 sit at their published lengths, widths and angles relative to each other. It is a design piece rather than a navigation chart, so fine details may be simplified or omitted. Markings, lighting and signage are examples of what gets left off.

Is this a good gift for someone connected to Spokane?

Yes. It works for pilots, controllers, frequent flyers and anyone who grew up under the approach path. The identifier, city, state, coordinates and elevation are set in the lower corner, so the piece explains itself without a caption.
