Gillespie Field Runway Diagram Print

Gillespie Field draws as a cross. In the print, the long east-west strip 9L/27R runs from the upper left down toward the right edge at a shallow tilt, 5,342 ft by 100 ft. Below it, offset to the east, sits the much shorter 9R/27L at 2,738 ft by 60 ft, close to parallel and about half the length. Running the full height of the sheet, 17/35 drops straight from top to bottom, 4,145 ft by 100 ft, and cuts through both of the east-west runways. Field elevation is 388 ft.

The field is county-owned and sits in El Cajon, about 11.5 miles northeast of downtown San Diego. It started in 1942, when the Marine Corps picked a site east of San Diego for parachute training, and the camp took its name from Lieutenant Archibald H. Gillespie. In 1946 the airfield was turned over to San Diego County and became a general aviation facility. Later tenants layered on: in 1971 the County Sheriff based its ASTREA helicopter unit here, and in 1993 the San Diego Aerospace Museum put its restoration operations and an exhibit at the field.
