Brown Field Municipal Airport Runway Diagram Print

Brown Field Municipal works two parallel runways, and this print plots both to scale from the published runway data. Runway 08L/26R carries the load at 7,972 feet by 150 feet, and 08R/26L runs alongside it at 3,185 feet by 75 feet, about a fifth of the paved area and less than half the length. The field is in the Otay Mesa neighborhood of San Diego, 13 miles southeast of downtown and a mile and a half north of the border with Mexico, which makes it a port of entry as well as a reliever field. Tijuana's airport lies just over a mile to the south on the other side of the line, at a similar length and a slightly different orientation, so the two layouts sit almost in conversation. Terrain shapes the operation too: ground rising to 3,600 feet less than six miles east rules out a precision approach to either runway end.

It started as an Army field. East Field opened in 1918 as an aerial gunnery and aerobatics school to take pressure off North Island, named for Major Whitten J. East, and Curtiss JN-4D Jennies flew there from 1918 to 1919. The Navy took the airfield over in 1943, first as Naval Auxiliary Air Station Otay Mesa and then as NAAS Brown Field, for Commander Melville S. Brown, who was killed in a crash near Descanso on November 2, 1936. On November 2, 1954, exactly eighteen years later, the Convair XFY-1 Pogo flew its full transition here: vertical takeoff, over to horizontal flight, then back down to a vertical landing. The Navy handed the field to the city of San Diego on September 1, 1962, on the condition that it stay a public airport. The drawing carries none of that and all of it at once: two runways, their designators, the proportions between them, composed from published airport information and available field depictions and set on a ground tone you choose.
