North Island NAS (Halsey Field) Runway Diagram Print

NZY prints as an X. Two runways cross in the image: 18/36 runs 8001 feet from the upper right down to the lower left, and 11/29 runs 7501 feet the other way, both 200 feet wide and both carrying the same surface code (PEM) in the published data. Their intersection lands well left of center, so one long dark bar and one slightly shorter bar meet at a shallow angle with open paper around them. Right of that crossing the sheet fills with apron shapes and rows of building blocks, which is why the artwork reads heavy on one side and quiet on the other.

The station sits at the north end of the Coronado peninsula on San Diego Bay and is part of Naval Base Coronado. It was commissioned a Naval Air Station in 1917, and was called Naval Air Station San Diego until 1955. In 1963 the station was granted official recognition as the Birthplace of Naval Aviation by resolution of the House Armed Services Committee. From 1997 to 2016 the Coronado Speed Festival ran on Runway 36 and the surrounding taxiways, which gives the long diagonal on this artwork a second life worth knowing about.

Field elevation is 26 feet, and the drawing keeps that flatness: no terrain, no clutter, just the runway bars, the taxiway web and the mass of the built-up side. The geometry does the work on a wall.
