Lawson Army Airfield is a military airport at Fort Benning in Chattahoochee County, Georgia, south of the city of Columbus. The Army laid out a rudimentary landing field at Benning in 1919, and from 1921 to 1931 aircraft from Maxwell Field near Montgomery, Alabama used it for maneuvers. The field took its name in 1931 in honor of Capt. Walter R. Lawson, a Georgia native who flew with the 41st French Escadrille during World War I and received the Distinguished Flying Cross. The Air Force turned the airfield back over to the Army in 1954, and it has carried the Lawson Army Airfield name ever since. In 1967 it stood in for Da Nang Air Base during the filming of The Green Berets.
