The field itself

This is Gary/Chicago's own layout, the way its runways run and the taxiways thread between them, composed into a print you will want to look at every day. Not a stock template with a new name on it.

Museum-quality cotton paper

Heavyweight 330 gsm, 100% cotton Hot Press paper, acid-free and archival-grade. Its high color gamut and black density give the runways real depth, and pigment inks keep the fine detail crisp on a smooth matte surface.

Solid wood framing or glossy metal

Frame it in 1.25 inch solid wood, black, white or natural oak, with the white beveled mat, optical-grade clear acrylic and hanging wire included. Or choose glossy metal: dye sublimation into aluminum, floated about 3/4 inch off the wall on a hidden mount.

Gary/Chicago International Airport Runway Diagram Print

Gary/Chicago International Airport works two runways of very unequal weight, and this print draws both to scale from published field information. Runway 12/30 does nearly all the work at 8,859 feet by 150 feet, a long line laid northwest to southeast, while 02/20 runs 3,604 feet by 100 feet on a roughly north-south heading. That imbalance is the composition: one dominant strip, one short one crossing it, and a lot of open field around them. Elevation is 597 feet, and the magnetic variation of 2W sits small in the corner the way a chart carries it.

The field is three miles northwest of downtown Gary, in Lake County, Indiana, and 25 miles southeast of the Chicago Loop, which is the whole argument behind the place. It opened in 1954 and has long pitched itself as the third airport for the region, supplementing O'Hare and Midway, and it is run by an authority created through an interstate compact between Gary, Chicago and the state of Indiana. Runway 12/30 only reached its present length on June 25, 2015, when a northwest extension took it from 7,003 feet to 8,859. Getting there meant burying high tension lines at the west end and reaching an agreement with the railroads to move elevated track clear of the runway, so anyone who knew this field before 2015 is looking at a different drawing.

This is a joint civil-military airport, and the uniformed half is not incidental: the Indiana Army National Guard keeps an Army Aviation Support Facility here for UH-60 Black Hawk operations, sited on ground that once held a Cold War Nike missile battery, and the Gary Air Show has based its operations at the field since 1999. UPS Airlines started running express parcels between Gary and Louisville on November 2, 2020. The print sets all of that traffic aside and keeps the plan view: two runways at their published length and width, the designators, and the open acreage around them, composed from published airport information and available field depictions onto a ground tone you choose. It reads as a clean graphic mark from across a room and rewards a closer look, which makes it a specific gift for anyone who flies out of northwest Indiana.
