Elkhart Municipal Airport Runway Diagram Print

Elkhart Municipal runs three runways, and the print gives each one a different weight. Runway 9/27, 6,500 by 120 feet of concrete, lies flat across the upper third of the sheet as the darkest line on the page. Runway 18/36, 3,999 by 75 feet of asphalt, drops away from near the 27 threshold and leans down the right edge. The two paved strips never cross. They meet at a corner and read as a long L, which is a shape that hangs well because the eye follows the horizontal first and then falls into the vertical.

The turf runway is the detail people notice second. Runway 8/26 measures 2,480 by 250 feet, making it the widest strip on the field by a wide margin and the shortest at the same time, and on the print it sits parallel to 9/27 and just below it as a stippled gray band with no taxiway reaching it. Between the main runway and the hangar line, the taxiway grid stacks into four long rectangles that give the top of the composition its structure. Everything else is negative space, which is why this one frames cleanly next to books or over a desk.

The field covers 640 acres at 778 feet above sea level, three nautical miles northwest of the central business district of Elkhart. Air Wisconsin flew scheduled passengers here through 1987, with service to Chicago O'Hare and Detroit runs that stopped at either Fort Wayne or Battle Creek. Midway Connection operated flights to Chicago Midway from 1987 until the service ended in 1990. In 2005 the airport handled 33,211 aircraft operations, an average of 90 per day.
