The field itself

This is Hancock's own layout, the way its runways run and the taxiways thread between them, composed into a print you will want to look at every day. Not a stock template with a new name on it.

Museum-quality cotton paper

Heavyweight 330 gsm, 100% cotton Hot Press paper, acid-free and archival-grade. Its high color gamut and black density give the runways real depth, and pigment inks keep the fine detail crisp on a smooth matte surface.

Solid wood framing or glossy metal

Frame it in 1.25 inch solid wood, black, white or natural oak, with the white beveled mat, optical-grade clear acrylic and hanging wire included. Or choose glossy metal: dye sublimation into aluminum, floated about 3/4 inch off the wall on a hidden mount.

Houghton County Memorial Airport Runway Diagram Print

Two runways cross in this print, and the crossing is the whole composition. Runway 14/32 is the long one at 6,501 by 150 feet, falling from the upper left corner toward the lower right. Runway 7/25 is 5,201 by 100 feet and runs the other way, low left to upper right. Both are asphalt. They intersect right of center, so the X sits high and off the middle of the sheet with open paper below it, which is why the layout reads as a graphic mark rather than a chart.

Houghton County Memorial is a county-owned public-use field on the Keweenaw Peninsula in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, four nautical miles southwest of the central business district of Calumet. It was commissioned at its current location in 1948. The field covers 1,996 acres, and the diagram sits at an elevation of 1,095 feet. On the left side of the sheet the taxiways loop back along both runways in a lighter gray, feeding a small apron and a short row of building blocks: enough structure to give the two black strips something to hang from without competing with them.

The identifier has a story of its own. According to the airport authority, CMX stands for Canadian Michigan eXchange, from the idea that the airfield would serve as an emergency diversion point for flights from cities like Toronto heading to western Canada. In practice the relatively short runway, limited emergency facilities and less favorable weather compared with Sawyer International Airport in Marquette mean that field is usually preferred. Printed large, plotted from published airport information, the two runway ends labeled 14 and 7 anchor the upper and lower left of the frame in whichever colorway you choose.

Hancock (CMX) print, common questions

How many runways does CMX have, and how long are they?

Two. Runway 14/32 is 6,501 by 150 feet and runway 7/25 is 5,201 by 100 feet, both asphalt. The print draws both, crossing in an X above the center of the sheet.

Where is Houghton County Memorial Airport?

Hancock, Michigan, on the Keweenaw Peninsula in the Upper Peninsula, four nautical miles southwest of the central business district of Calumet. The field elevation is 1,095 feet, printed under the identifier block.

What does the code CMX stand for?

According to the airport authority, CMX stands for Canadian Michigan eXchange, tied to the field's intended role as an emergency diversion point for flights from cities like Toronto to western Canada. The three letters set the type block in the lower right of the print.

How accurate is the diagram?

The runway designators, relative lengths, widths and crossing angle are plotted from published airport data for the field. It is a print, not a navigation document: fine details may be simplified or omitted, including markings, lighting, signage and minor pavement edges, and it should never be used for flight planning.

What sizes are available?

Several standard print sizes, printed to order. The X shape here has a lot of open paper around it, so it scales well: a small size stays crisp above a desk, and a large size lets the 6,501 foot runway carry a wall on its own.

Is this a good gift for someone connected to the Keweenaw?

Yes. It works for a pilot who has flown into the field, a student or alum who has arrived through it, or anyone with roots in the Upper Peninsula. The identifier and coordinates are printed on the sheet, so the reference is legible without any explanation.
