Rhinelander/Oneida County Airport Runway Diagram Print

RHI is a two runway field sitting at 1,623 feet of elevation, and the print carries both strips at their published proportions. Runway 9/27, 6,800 by 150 feet of concrete, is drawn as one long horizontal bar running most of the width of the sheet. The shorter 15/33, 5,201 by 100 feet of asphalt, comes down on a diagonal from the upper right and meets the long runway near its eastern end. What you get is a lopsided junction rather than a tidy X: one dominant line, one slanted answer to it, and a lot of quiet space on the left where the pavement simply runs out.

The airport sits about 2 nautical miles southwest of the central business district of Rhinelander, in Oneida County, and it is owned by the city and the county. The field covers 1,259 acres, and the Rhinelander VORTAC navigational facility is located there. In 2022 it recorded 24,958 aircraft operations, an average of 68 per day, most of that general aviation, and in 2024 there were 43 aircraft based on the field. On the sheet, the terminal apron and hangar rows cluster in the lower right, a dense little block of gray that keeps the composition from floating.

There is a local story under the geometry. In 1975, when North Central Airlines was considering ending service to Rhinelander, stockbroker Robert Heck learned of it and built a campaign, presenting his case locally and in Washington, D.C., work that led to businesses opening near the airport and to a 1979 terminal replacing a building of 3,482 square feet. A statue of John Heisman, whose name is on college football's trophy and who is buried in Rhinelander, stands just inside the airport.

Framed, this one reads well at a distance because the main runway gives the eye a single strong horizontal, and the crosswind strip breaks it before it gets boring.
