The field itself

This is Colby's own layout, the way its runways run and the taxiways thread between them, composed into a print you will want to look at every day. Not a stock template with a new name on it.

Museum-quality cotton paper

Heavyweight 330 gsm, 100% cotton Hot Press paper, acid-free and archival-grade. Its high color gamut and black density give the runways real depth, and pigment inks keep the fine detail crisp on a smooth matte surface.

Solid wood framing or glossy metal

Frame it in 1.25 inch solid wood, black, white or natural oak, with the white beveled mat, optical-grade clear acrylic and hanging wire included. Or choose glossy metal: dye sublimation into aluminum, floated about 3/4 inch off the wall on a hidden mount.

Shalz Field Runway Diagram Print

Shalz Field (CBK) carries three runways at 3,188 feet above sea level in Colby, Kansas, and that count is what gives this airport map print its geometry. The paved strip, 17/35, runs nearly straight up and down the sheet at 5,110 by 75 feet on a concrete surface, inked solid and dark so it anchors the whole composition. A taxiway traces the full length of its west side, broken into long bays, with the apron and a scatter of small buildings tucked against the middle of it.

The two turf runways do the interesting work. 12/30 measures 2,660 by 90 feet and 04/22 measures 2,600 by 80 feet, and in the drawing they cross each other at a wide angle off to the east, forming a clean X of stippled grass that sits apart from the hard surface. The 12 end and the 04 end both reach back toward the concrete runway, so the eye travels from the solid black line out into the open field. Runway end numbers sit at each threshold, the coordinates and the elevation are set in the corner under the CBK block, and the rest of the sheet stays empty on purpose.

On a wall, this one reads as a single strong vertical with a loose X hanging beside it, which is a more interesting shape than most three runway fields produce. It suits a hallway or an office where you want negative space doing half the work, and the contrast between the dark paved strip and the lighter turf holds up across the colorway you choose. Goodland is close enough west that a pair of prints makes sense, and Hays fills out a High Plains Kansas set if you want a row of three.

Colby (CBK) print, common questions

How many runways does Shalz Field have?

Three. Runway 17/35 is 5,110 by 75 feet with a concrete surface, runway 12/30 is 2,660 by 90 feet of turf, and runway 04/22 is 2,600 by 80 feet of turf. All three appear in the print, with the two turf runways crossing each other east of the paved strip.

What is the longest runway at CBK?

Runway 17/35, at 5,110 feet long and 75 feet wide. It is the only concrete runway on the field and the only one drawn as a solid dark band, running top to bottom through the sheet with its parallel taxiway alongside.

Where is Shalz Field and how high is it?

It serves Colby, Kansas, at 39.4275 degrees north and 101.0466 degrees west, with a field elevation of 3,188 feet. Those coordinates and the elevation are printed in the corner block beneath the identifier, so the artwork stands on its own without a caption.

What does CBK mean?

CBK is the three letter location identifier for Shalz Field in Colby, Kansas. The print uses that identifier alone as the large type at the lower right, which is why the piece reads as a graphic first and an airport diagram second.

How accurate is the layout in this print?

The diagram is plotted from published airport information for Shalz Field, including the runway designators, the relative lengths and widths of all three runways, and the way the turf pair crosses beside the concrete strip. It is a stylised drawing, so fine details may be simplified or omitted. Pavement markings, lighting and signage are examples of what gets left out.

Does this make a good gift, and what formats can I get?

It works well for anyone with a tie to Colby or to flying off grass. Runway end numbers are legible at each threshold, so the recipient can pick out the strip they know without any explanation from you. Choose from a Fine Art Print, a Framed Fine Art Print, a Glossy Metal Print, or a Digital Download if you want to handle framing yourself. Physical pieces are made to order.
