Tri-Cities Airport Runway Diagram Print

Tri-Cities Airport works two runways of matched width, and this print plots both to scale from the published runway data. Runway 5/23 is the long one at 8,000 feet by 150 feet, with 9/27 at 4,443 feet by that same 150 feet. Both are asphalt. The short runway being as wide as the long one is what gives the sheet its character: the second strip reads as a stubby bar rather than the thin line most fields put beside a main runway. Elevation is 1,519 feet, and the magnetic variation of 7W sits small in the corner the way a chart carries it.

The airport exists because three cities could not each build their own. In the mid-1930s Johnson City's airfield and Kingsport's airstrip were judged impractical to expand, so Bristol, Johnson City and Kingsport went in with Sullivan County on a new field built on 323 acres between them. By September 1937 two small runways, a terminal building and a hangar were up, and the first airliner had come in, an American Airlines DC-2. Senator Kenneth McKellar dedicated it as McKellar Field on November 5, 1937. The site runs to 1,250 acres now, with a street address in Blountville, Tennessee, hard against the Kingsport city limits, and the Tri-Cities Airport Authority governs it with members appointed by Johnson City, Kingsport, both Bristols, and Washington and Sullivan counties.

The first jets in were Piedmont 727-100s and Southern DC-9-10s in 1967, and by 1977 a Piedmont 737-200 was working a nonstop to New York LaGuardia. The field handled 454,000 passengers in 2024, and over the twelve months ending in October 2025 its two busiest routes ran to Atlanta and Charlotte. None of that shows up in the drawing. What shows up is the shape: two runways at their published lengths and widths, the designators, and the ground between them, composed from published airport information and available field depictions and set on a ground tone you choose.
