Knoxville Downtown Island Airport Runway Diagram Print

DKX has one runway, and the print hands it the whole page. Runway 8/26 is drawn as a single dark band cutting from the lower left up to the right, labeled 8 at one threshold and 26 at the other, with the numbers set into the pavement the way they sit on a diagram. It is 3,499 feet long and 75 feet wide, asphalt, and the drawing holds that long, narrow proportion instead of fattening it for effect. Below the strip, a lighter taxiway runs alongside and then bends down into a cluster of apron and hangar shapes, so the composition has one confident line and a small dense knot of detail under it. The field was established in 1930 by Tom Kesterson. Evelyn Johnson, holder of the Guinness Book of Records entry for most hours logged by a woman pilot, started flying at Island Home Airport in 1944. It became a public aviation facility in 1963 under the ownership of the City of Knoxville, and in 1978 it was transferred to the Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority, its current owner and operator.

As artwork, this one works because of restraint. A single long diagonal across mostly empty space is a strong graphic on its own, and the apron block gives the eye somewhere to land.
