Space Coast Regional Airport Runway Diagram Print

Space Coast Regional works two asphalt runways set roughly square to each other, and this print plots both to scale from the published runway data. Runway 18/36 is the long one at 7,319 feet by 150 feet, with 09/27 at 5,000 feet by 100 feet. Because their designators sit about 90 degrees apart, the layout reads as a clean right-angle composition, the sort of shape that works on a wall without any help. Field elevation is 34 feet, and the magnetic variation of 5W goes small in the corner the way a chart carries it.

The field is in Titusville, in Brevard County, and it is the nearest commercial airport to the Kennedy Space Center. It was built in 1943 by the government on land the cities of Titusville and Cocoa owned jointly, as an outlying field for Naval Air Station Sanford, and it opened with two 5,000 foot runways and a taxiway system. The Navy let it go after the war and the property was deeded back to the two cities on April 18, 1947, which is why the older name, Ti-Co, still gets used around the ramp. When NASA built its own launch complex on Merritt Island in the early 1960s, this airport became a working door into the program for people and equipment.

It has had a stranger life than most general aviation fields. On December 30, 1956, its taxiways and runways were used as a NASCAR Grand National course, and Fireball Roberts won the race in a Peter DePaolo Ford. Eastern Air Lines flew scheduled jets out of Titusville from 1970 to 1974. The Valiant Air Command Warbird Museum is based on the field, and the TICO Air Show has run there every year since 1977, drawing about 30,000 people in 2008.
