Orlando Sanford International Airport Runway Diagram Print

Four runways at Orlando Sanford International, and on the print they resolve into one long horizontal band with a single vertical strip cutting straight through it. The band is 9L/27R at 11,002 by 150 feet, the longest surface on the field and the only line that runs nearly the full width of the composition. The vertical runway is 18/36, 6,002 by 150 feet, crossing just past the midpoint and continuing down well below everything else. The result is a clean plus shape high in the frame with a lot of quiet space under it.

Two shorter east-west strips sit below the long one. 9C/27C is the stub of the group at 3,578 by 75 feet, tucked close underneath and stopping where the vertical runway comes through. 9R/27L is longer at 5,839 by 75 feet and sits lower and further east, dropped far enough down the page to read as its own separate line rather than part of a tight parallel stack. The gray taxiway and apron work bunches toward the left side around the terminal area, so the drawing leans, which is more character than a symmetrical field usually gives you.

The field opened as Naval Air Station Sanford, a master jet base for carrier-based attack and reconnaissance aircraft, and stayed with the Navy until 1969, when the City of Sanford took control. The dominant runway grew out of the station's original Runway 9/27, and a project that added 1,400 feet to 9L/27R was completed in 2013. The two parallels came later, one built over a previous taxiway and one built new for small aircraft, while 18/36 is another Navy runway kept for the rare northerly fronts of winter. Since 1998 most passenger traffic here has come from Allegiant Air, which uses Sanford as an operating base.
