Whiteman AFB Runway Diagram Print

Whiteman AFB is a one runway field, and the print leans all the way into that. Runway 01/19 measures 12,400 feet by 150 feet on a concrete surface, and in the rendered image it reads as a single dark strip running almost the full height of the frame, tilted just off vertical, with the numeral 1 at the low end and 19 at the high end. Nothing crosses it. Everything else on the sheet is pale gray supporting geometry: a long taxiway loop climbing away to the upper left, a broad ramp and rows of hangar blocks stacked down the left side, and a spur reaching off to the lower right. The field sits at 871 feet of elevation, noted in the corner block with the coordinates and the identifier.

The site started as the Sedalia Glider Base, selected in 1942 to train WACO glider pilots, and was renamed for 2nd Lt George Whiteman, a Missourian killed during the attack on Pearl Harbor. In 1963 the base changed character entirely, moving from bombers to Minuteman missiles, a job that took 867,000 cubic yards of excavation for underground launch facilities. In 1993 the installation's first B-2 Spirit touched down on this runway, and in 1994 the 442nd Fighter Wing arrived with A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft as a tenant command. The whole installation covers 5,566 acres of rural Johnson County, roughly 60 miles east-southeast of Kansas City.

As artwork, the appeal is the ratio. One very long stroke against a lot of quiet paper is closer to a minimal graphic than to a busy diagram, and that slight lean off vertical keeps it from looking like a ruled line. Hung in portrait, the runway carries the eye top to bottom while the ramp clutter on the left gives the composition its only texture. It holds up at small sizes because there is a single subject to read, and it rewards a large size because the hangar rows and the taxiway loop only resolve up close.
