Sacramento International Airport Runway Diagram Print

Sacramento International works two parallel runways, and the print draws them as two long black bars standing on end, one near each edge of the sheet. The left bar is 17R/35L at 8,598 feet. The right bar is 17L/35R at 8,605 feet, seven feet longer and the longest strip on the field. Both are 150 feet wide and grooved concrete. Nothing crosses here: the pair runs straight north to south, with a wide gray spread of taxiways, aprons and terminal blocks stacked between them. The symmetry is broad and quiet, and the open sheet left on either side is what makes it hang well.

The west bar came first. The field opened in 1967 as Sacramento Metropolitan Airport, and that original west runway is the one now designated 17R/35L. The east runway followed in 1987. The airport took its current name when Terminal A opened in 1998. The numbers along the bars are newer than the pavement: the runways were redesignated from 16/34 to 17/35 in 2020, so the sheet carries the current headings rather than the old ones.

The diagram also reads as a working field. When winds come from the south the airfield operates in South Flow, with arrivals and departures on 17R and 17L; the rest of the year it flips to North Flow on 35L and 35R. The print holds both directions at once, because the same two bars carry all four numbers, one at each end. Framed, it is a tall composition: two verticals, a busy middle, and a corner block with the SMF call, the city and state, the coordinates and the field elevation of 27 feet.
