Griffiss International Airport Runway Diagram Print

Griffiss International runs on one runway: 15/33, 11,820 by 200 feet, asphalt. That single strip is what the print is built around, one long black diagonal falling from the upper left of the sheet toward the lower right, with 15 and 33 set in white at either end. Eleven thousand feet of pavement gives the line enough reach to run almost corner to corner, and the field elevation, 504 feet, sits in small type under the identifier block.

The field is a public airport in Oneida County, about one mile east of the central business district of Rome, and it stands on the former site of Griffiss Air Force Base, which closed in 1995. Ground was broken on the original air depot in 1941, with construction supervised by Kenneth Nichols of the Syracuse Engineer District. In 1999 the airfield hosted the Woodstock '99 music festival. In 2006 operations from the Oneida County Airport in Oriskany were transferred here. A strip this long, on a field with that history, reads on paper as an old bomber-era runway that a civilian airport inherited whole.
