Ocala International-Jim Taylor Field Runway Diagram Print

Ocala International-Jim Taylor Field works two asphalt runways, and one of them carries the whole composition: 18/36 at 7,468 by 150 feet runs the height of the sheet as a single unbroken bar, numbered 18 at the north end and 36 at the south. The second runway, 08/26 at 3,010 by 50 feet, is a thin strip set off to the northwest, tilted slightly so its east end rides higher than its west end. The two do not meet. The short strip stops just clear of the ground north of the long runway's threshold, which leaves the print reading as one dominant vertical line with a small bar floating above and to its left. Field elevation is 90 feet above sea level and magnetic variation is 4W, so the plotted headings sit near true north without quite reaching it.

The rest of the field is stacked on the east side. A parallel taxiway shadows the long runway for most of its length, connector stubs step off it at intervals, and the aprons, hangar rows and buildings crowd the right-hand third of the drawing, densest opposite the north half and thinning to a single pad near the south end. That lopsidedness is the interesting part of the layout: a wide, empty west margin against a busy eastern edge, which is how the field is put together and what makes the diagram worth hanging.

The airport opened in the early 1960s, replacing an earlier Taylor Field southwest of town. Eastern Airlines ran one Convair 440 a day through it on a routing that linked Jacksonville, Gainesville, Ocala, Vero Beach and Miami and returned the same way, later flying Lockheed L-188 Electra turboprops, with the last Electra leaving in 1972. Scheduled airline flights ended in 1987 when USAir Express pulled out, after which the field added a crosswind runway, an extension to the main runway and an instrument approach. On the print none of that history is spelled out.
