Keystone Heights Airport Runway Diagram Print

Keystone Heights Airport (42J) has two asphalt runways, and on this print they do something most fields do not: they meet. Runway 05/23 runs 5,046 by 100 feet and runway 11/29 runs 4,899 by 75 feet, and the drawing shows both ending at the same corner on the right side of the sheet, where the 23 and 29 thresholds sit almost shoulder to shoulder. The result is a wide open V, or an arrowhead, with the two dark strips fanning out to the west across an otherwise quiet field. Taxiways, aprons and the tidy rows of hangars along the southeast edge are held back in soft gray so the two runways carry the whole composition.

The field was constructed in 1942 as Crystal Lake Airfield and commissioned that year as Keystone Army Airfield by the United States Army Air Forces, used as part of the Air University's Army Air Forces School of Applied Tactics. After the end of World War II the facility was turned over to the City of Keystone Heights in 1947. The airport is adjacent to Camp Blanding, the Florida National Guard Reservation, and it covers 2,476 acres at an elevation of 196 feet above mean sea level. That wartime origin is legible in the geometry: two long, generously wide strips angled to catch the wind, not a single modern airline runway.
