Key West NAS (Boca Chica Field) Runway Diagram Print

Three paved runways converge into a six-armed star at Key West NAS (Boca Chica Field), and that knot of pavement carries the composition. Runway 08/26 is the long arm at 10,001 feet by 200 feet, crossing the sheet from lower left to upper right on a shallow line. Runway 04/22 climbs more steeply at 7,001 feet by 150 feet, and 14/32 falls the other way at 7,000 feet by 150 feet. Their crossing sits well left of center, so the six arms come out at uneven lengths while the taxiways, ramps and hardstands fill the right side and the upper left in a lighter gray.

The station is on Boca Chica Key, four miles east of the central business district of Key West, and the print carries the field elevation of 6 feet under the identifier. NAS Key West is an air-to-air combat training facility for fighter aircraft of all military services, with favorable flying conditions year round and nearby aerial ranges. Runways for land based and carrier based aircraft were laid on Boca Chica Key during World War II, and in 1945 the satellite airfields there were combined into a single aviation activity designated U.S. Naval Air Station, Key West. In 1946, Air Test and Evaluation Squadron 1 was established at the station and spent the next three decades evaluating antisubmarine warfare systems out of Boca Chica.

In 1962, during the Cuban Missile Crisis, Nike Hercules missiles were moved in from the Homestead and Miami area, and Hawk missiles were set up in and around Key West using the radar facilities. None of that history shows on the sheet, and it does not have to: what hangs on the wall is the geometry that made an island field worth keeping, six black arms radiating off one pale ground. Very little vertical information competes with them, since the field sits barely above the water, so the artwork reads flat and graphic from across a room.
