The field itself

This is Manteo's own layout, the way its runways run and the taxiways thread between them, composed into a print you will want to look at every day. Not a stock template with a new name on it.

Museum-quality cotton paper

Heavyweight 330 gsm, 100% cotton Hot Press paper, acid-free and archival-grade. Its high color gamut and black density give the runways real depth, and pigment inks keep the fine detail crisp on a smooth matte surface.

Solid wood framing or glossy metal

Frame it in 1.25 inch solid wood, black, white or natural oak, with the white beveled mat, optical-grade clear acrylic and hanging wire included. Or choose glossy metal: dye sublimation into aluminum, floated about 3/4 inch off the wall on a hidden mount.

Dare County Regional Airport Runway Diagram Print

Dare County Regional works with two asphalt runways that cross near the middle of the field, and that crossing is the entire composition. Runway 05/23 is the longer of the pair at 4,306 feet by 100 feet, running from the lower left corner of the sheet up to the right. Runway 17/35 measures 3,303 feet by 75 feet and falls the other way, from the top of the frame down to the right edge of the drawing. They meet a little above center, and the wider strip carries slightly more weight on the page, so the X sits off balance instead of reading as a neat cross.

Everything else is set back a tone. Taxiways loop out in pale grey, wide on the west side where they wrap a long apron, tighter on the east where a cluster of hangars and tie down rows steps out toward the margin. That two tone treatment is what keeps the piece calm at a distance: the runways do the shape, the pavement fills the field around them. The caption block carries the identifier, the city and state, the coordinates and the field elevation of 13 feet, which is about as low as a runway gets.

This is a small field drawn honestly, not padded out, and it hangs well for that reason. On its own the X reads as one graphic mark from across a room. Put it in a row with the Norfolk sheet or the New Bern sheet and the drawing language stays constant while the field shapes do the talking. The colorway you choose sets how hard the runway bars separate from the taxiway grey.

Manteo (MQI) print, common questions

How many runways does Dare County Regional have?

Two. Runway 05/23 and runway 17/35, both asphalt, and they cross near the middle of the field. That crossing is what the print is built around.

How long are the runways at MQI?

Runway 05/23 is 4,306 feet long and 100 feet wide, the longest at the field. Runway 17/35 is 3,303 feet long and 75 feet wide.

Where is MQI and what is the elevation?

MQI is the identifier for Dare County Regional in Manteo, North Carolina, at 35.918983 north and 75.695536 west. Field elevation is 13 feet, and that number is printed in the caption block.

How accurate is the layout?

The diagram is plotted from published runway data for MQI: the runway designators, the lengths relative to one another, the widths and the angle the two strips make where they cross. It is artwork rather than a navigation document, so fine details may be simplified or omitted. Pavement markings, lighting and signage are the usual examples.

What sizes and finishes does this come in?

The MQI artwork is offered as a Fine Art Print, a Framed Fine Art Print, a Glossy Metal Print and a Digital Download, across a range of sizes. Physical pieces are made to order. The digital option is a file you download.

Is this a good gift for a pilot?

It works if the person has a reason to know this field: trained here, keeps an aircraft on the ramp, or flies the Outer Banks run. The runway numbers and the field elevation are legible up close, so it reads as a specific place rather than generic aviation decor.
