Kinston Regional Jetport at Stallings Field Runway Diagram Print

ISO is a one runway field, and the print is built entirely around that fact. Kinston Regional Jetport at Stallings Field has a single runway, 05/23, measuring 11,498 feet long and 150 feet wide on an asphalt surface, and it lands on the sheet as one unbroken dark bar running from the 5 threshold at the lower left to the 23 marker at the upper right. Very few small fields give you a line that long to work with. The eye reads it as a stroke of type rather than a piece of infrastructure, which is why this layout hangs well without any of the busyness a multi runway diagram brings.

The field sits about three miles northwest of the center of Kinston, in Lenoir County. It was built in 1944 by the United States Navy and opened as a Marine Corps auxiliary training airfield, reopened in 1950 for Air Force contract flight training, and was renamed Stallings Air Base in 1952 in memory of two Kinston natives, Lt Bruce Stallings and Lt Harry Stallings, both killed in 1945. Flying training ended in 1957 and the base was inactivated the same year. The present terminal opened in 1978, and as nearby Greenville and New Bern built up airports of their own, scheduled airline flights at Kinston wound down and stopped by 2000. The runway stayed, long enough to take the large jets chartered by college football teams, and the adjoining Global TransPark industrial park was developed to draw high tech industry to eastern North Carolina.

Everything else on the print is deliberately quiet. The taxiway system, aprons and hangar rows are held in a pale tone and pushed to the southeast side of the runway, so the diagonal keeps all the contrast to itself, and a lighter crossing shape of pavement sits off to the west as a second, softer figure. Down in the lower right corner the identifier ISO, the city line, the coordinates and the 93 foot elevation are set as a small block of text. In the colorway you choose, the composition stays the same: one long line, one cluster of supporting geometry, a lot of open ground.
