Midland International Air and Space Port Runway Diagram Print

Midland International Air and Space Port puts four asphalt runways into one figure, and the print draws all four. 16R/34L is the long one, 9,501 feet by 150 feet, standing as the near vertical spine of the sheet. 10/28 enters from the upper left at 8,302 feet by 150 feet and crosses that spine a little above center. Lower right, 04/22 (4,605 feet by 75 feet) runs up from beside the 34L threshold to meet the far end of 10/28, and the two lines close into a long narrow wedge. 16L/34R, 4,247 feet by 100 feet, sits on the same alignment as the big strip but well to the east, and both diagonals pass through it.

As art, that arrangement does something most airport diagrams do not. The wedge on the right pulls the eye off center, so the composition leans instead of sitting square, and the black runway bars read as one deliberate figure rather than a grid. Everything softer stays in grey: taxiway loops, the wide apron, the terminal and hangar rows stacked along the west side. Designator boxes ride on the ends of each strip, the MAF wordmark anchors the lower corner, and the coordinates and ELEV 2872 FT line sit under it in small caps. In whichever colorway you choose, the grey layer recedes at a distance and the four bars carry the wall.

The name is not decoration. In 2014 Midland was licensed to serve commercial spaceflight, the first primary commercial service airport certified as a spaceport. The field began as Sloan Field, started in 1927 by Samuel Addison Sloan on leased grassland, and later became Midland Army Air Field, home of the Army Air Forces Bombardier School and one of the West Texas Bombardier Quadrangle schools alongside the fields at Childress, San Angelo and Big Spring. Since 1991 the Commemorative Air Force has been at Midland, where it holds an annual warbird airshow. The airport sits inside the Midland city limits, roughly midway between downtown Midland and downtown Odessa.
