Abilene Regional Airport Runway Diagram Print

Abilene Regional Airport works two parallel asphalt runways, and the print is built around the offset between them. They are staggered rather than set side by side: 17R/35L sits high on the page, and 17L/35R picks up below it and to the right, starting close to the point where the first one ends, so the pair reads as one long stepped line down the composition. The airline history is longer than a two runway field suggests. In 1949 American Airlines ended the service that had made Abilene a stop on its overnight Dallas to Los Angeles run, flown by twelve passenger Curtiss Condors with sleeper berths. Trans Texas Airways brought the first jet service to the field by 1968 with Douglas DC-9s, and under its later name, Texas International, it flew from here to Amarillo and Lubbock. Chaparral Airlines, a regional carrier based in Abilene, started flying in 1976 and became an American Eagle airline on December 1, 1984.

The field covers 1,644 acres about three miles southeast of downtown Abilene, in Taylor County, and the city owns and operates it. A former third runway, 4/22, was decommissioned as of 2023, which is why no diagonal strip crosses the parallel pair on the sheet. The terminal apron sits at the top of the drawing, a curved stand of gate positions west of the 17R threshold, with hangar and ramp blocks filling the middle ground between the two runways. In the year ending May 31, 2023, general aviation accounted for 54 percent of the airport's 41,459 aircraft operations, with military training at another 29 percent.

Runway designators, lengths and widths follow the published figures, and taxiways and apron edges are reduced to flat geometry over the ground tone you choose.
