Dyess AFB Runway Diagram Print

Dyess AFB prints as three parallel runways, and nothing crosses anything. Runway 16/34 runs almost the full height of the sheet as one unbroken bar, 13,500 ft long and 300 ft wide, concrete, and that single line carries the whole composition. Two much shorter strips sit off to the west: 163/343 at 3,500 ft by 60 ft on dirt, and 164/344 at 3,498 ft by 60 ft on asphalt. In the render the dirt strip is filled with a fine stipple while the asphalt strip is drawn solid, so two runways of nearly identical length still read as different objects.

The base sits about 7 miles southwest of downtown Abilene and roughly 150 miles west of Fort Worth. It was established in 1942 as Abilene Army Air Base and took its present name in 1956, honoring Texas native Lieutenant Colonel William Dyess, a Bataan Death March survivor who escaped Japanese capture on Bataan. In 1985 the 96th Bombardment Wing received its first Rockwell B-1B Lancer to replace the B-52 Stratofortress. In 2003 the first operational B-1B, known as The Star of Abilene, made its final flight, and that same year the base became the first Department of Defense installation in the United States powered exclusively by renewable wind energy. Parts of the old Tye Army Air Field runway, and part of its parking area, still exist on the west side of the base.

As art, the appeal is the tilt and the imbalance. The long runway leans across the page at a slight diagonal, the two stubby strips cluster low and left, and the apron, taxiways and building blocks pile up along the east flank in soft grey, leaving the upper left corner nearly empty. Elevation of 1,790 ft, the coordinates and the DYS identifier sit in a small type block at lower right. Whichever colorway you choose, the shape holds at a distance: one long line, two short ones, all aimed the same way.
