Tri-State/Milton J Ferguson Field Runway Diagram Print

HTS reads as one long asphalt strip laid diagonally across the upper half of the sheet, thresholds labeled 12 at the left end and 30 at the right. Tri-State/Milton J Ferguson Field has a single runway, 7,017 by 150 feet, and the composition lets it carry the whole picture instead of pretending the field is busier than it is. The rest of the sheet stays in grey: taxiways running back along both flanks of the strip, an apron and terminal cluster sitting above the midpoint, and one long taxiway reaching south toward the lower edge. The identifier anchors the bottom corner in heavy type, with the city line, the coordinates and the 828 foot elevation stacked under it.

The field's airline history is older than the current runway length suggests. Eastern and Allegheny both arrived in 1953, and the first jets were Piedmont 737s in 1969, when the runway measured 5,280 feet. In 1968 an Eastern timetable turned the airport into one line of geography, LEX-HTS-EWR, threading Lexington and Newark through Huntington. By 1970 the 727s were running a longer version of the same idea, Louisville to Lexington to Huntington to Charleston to Washington, which is a lot of route map for a single strip of pavement.

The numbers on that strip have moved. In 1970 the same pavement was designated 11/29, and the shift to 12/30 came from magnetic declination changing over the decades, which is the kind of quiet detail a diagram print preserves without comment. That approach end is also where a chartered Southern Airways DC-9 came down short of the runway in 1970, carrying the Marshall University football team, coaching staff and boosters, the loss later retold in the 2006 film We Are Marshall. For a lot of buyers in Wayne County and the towns the airport serves, that is not trivia, it is why the diagram means something on a wall.

As art, the diagonal is the whole trick.
