Materials

Fine Art Print: pigment giclée printing on heavyweight 330 gsm (17 mil), 100% cotton Hot Press paper, on regularly calibrated giclée printers. The paper is acid-free and archival-grade, with a smooth matte surface and the high color gamut and black density that let a dark ground and fine linework keep their depth. Supplied unframed, with no added white margin, ready for your own frame.

Dimensions

Fine Art Print: 8 x 10, 16 x 20, and 24 x 30 inches.

Made like something you keep.

The field itself

This is Helena's own layout, the way its runways run and the taxiways thread between them, composed into a print you will want to look at every day. Not a stock template with a new name on it.

Museum-quality cotton paper

Heavyweight 330 gsm, 100% cotton Hot Press paper, acid-free and archival-grade. Its high color gamut and black density give the runways real depth, and pigment inks keep the fine detail crisp on a smooth matte surface.

Solid wood framing or glossy metal

Frame it in 1.25 inch solid wood, black, white or natural oak, with the white beveled mat, optical-grade clear acrylic and hanging wire included. Or choose glossy metal: dye sublimation into aluminum, floated about 3/4 inch off the wall on a hidden mount.

Helena Regional Airport Runway Diagram Print

Helena Regional prints as a wide X with a spine dropped through it. Four runways are drawn. The longest, 09/27, is 9,000 by 150 feet of asphalt and it runs almost the full width of the sheet, tilting down to the right so the composition never sits flat.

The second black line, 05/23, climbs from the lower left at 4,644 by 75 feet and cuts across 09/27 in the left third of the field. That puts the main crossing off center, which is what keeps the image from reading as a symbol. Runway 17/35, 2,989 by 75 feet, runs vertically through both, and the top of 05/23 ends right where that vertical line begins. The fourth strip is turf: 10/28, 1,584 by 75 feet, rendered in a pale stippled tone that sits quietly below the paved lines instead of competing with them.

The field is two miles northeast of Helena, in Lewis and Clark County, Montana, and it is owned by the Helena Regional Airport Authority. It covers 1,224 acres at an elevation of 3,877 feet, and that elevation is printed under the coordinates in the corner block. In 2013 the airport recorded 38,877 aircraft operations, an average of 106 a day. Hang it next to Great Falls if you want two Montana fields with very different geometry side by side.

As an object on a wall it is mostly about that long diagonal. Sizes run from desk scale up to something that anchors a hallway, and the colorway you choose changes how hard the runway lines read against the taxiway grey. It makes a direct gift for a pilot who has flown into Helena, or for anyone who spent enough time in the terminal to know the shape of the place.

Helena (HLN) print, common questions

How many runways does Helena Regional have, and what does the print show?

Four, and all four are drawn. 09/27 is 9,000 by 150 feet, 05/23 is 4,644 by 75 feet, 17/35 is 2,989 by 75 feet, and 10/28 is a 1,584 by 75 foot turf strip shown in a lighter texture.

How long is the longest runway at HLN?

9,000 feet, at 150 feet wide, asphalt. It is runway 09/27, the long diagonal that crosses the whole sheet.

What is the field elevation at Helena Regional?

3,877 feet. The number appears in the corner block of the print, below the latitude and longitude.

Where is HLN, and what does the code mean?

HLN is the identifier for Helena Regional Airport, a public airport two miles northeast of Helena in Lewis and Clark County, Montana. HLN is the code you see on a bag tag; the print uses it rather than any second code.

How accurate is the diagram?

It is plotted from published airport information for the current charting cycle, so runway designators, relative lengths and crossing angles follow that data. It is composed for a wall rather than for navigation, and fine details may be simplified or omitted. Pavement markings, lighting and signage are the usual examples.

What sizes are available?

Several sizes, from small desk formats up to large statement pieces, each in the colorway you choose. Every print is made to order and shipped free within the US, so the wide 09/27 diagonal stays the focal point at any size.
