Great Falls International Airport Runway Diagram Print

Great Falls International Airport works two asphalt runways, and the diagram is built around the long one: 03/21 at 10,502 by 150 feet, with 17/35 at 6,030 by 150 feet standing off to the northwest. Field elevation is 3,680 feet above sea level, and magnetic variation is 13E, so the plotted headings sit noticeably off true north. Those two strips give the print its whole structure: a long diagonal spine running southwest to northeast, with a shorter vertical bar set beside it that stops just short of the diagonal, so the gap between them does as much work in the composition as the pavement does.

The field was initiated in November 1928 and spent World War II under War Department lease as Gore Field, named for the Gore Hill ground it occupies southwest of the city. The 7th Ferrying Group of Air Transport Command was based there and flew American aircraft north toward Fairbanks, Alaska, where Soviet pilots collected them under the Lend Lease program. More than 7,500 bombers and fighters passed through Great Falls during the war years. The Army bought an additional 740 acres and put up buildings before the Department of Defense deeded the field back to the City of Great Falls in June 1948, and two wooden hangars from the war still stood on the property as of 2015.

Great Falls Air National Guard Base sits on the field, and the Montana Air National Guard's 120th Airlift Wing reequipped with the C-130 Hercules there in 2014. Malmstrom Air Force Base is a separate installation ten miles east of here and is not what this diagram shows. On the civil side, Great Falls recorded the fifth highest passenger boardings among Montana's fifteen major airports in 2011, behind Billings, Bozeman, Missoula and Kalispell. The terminal is also worth a mention for its own reason: it holds 883 model airplanes built and painted by Great Falls resident Bary Poletto between 1977 and 2003.
