Greenwood-Leflore Airport Runway Diagram Print

Greenwood-Leflore puts two runways on the sheet, and they meet in a lopsided cross well above the center of the field. Runway 18/36 is the long one at 6,501 by 150 feet, running nearly straight down the print from top to bottom. Runway 05/23 is 5,011 by 150 feet and cuts across it on a diagonal, entering low on the left and leaving high on the right, so the intersection sits in the upper third rather than the middle. Both are asphalt. The elevation, 162 feet, is set in the corner block under the GWO wordmark with the coordinates.

The field has a long service record behind that geometry. It was built by the United States Army Air Forces as a basic flight training airfield, home to the 7th Basic Flying Training Group, and flight training there ended in 1945. Women's Army Service Pilots flew from the field before training stopped in 1945. The base sat idle until 1967, when the city moved its municipal airport onto the old Army field and put runway 5/23 back in use with lighting. A control tower was commissioned in 1989, and in the early 1990s runway 18/36 was lengthened and strengthened to take wide-body aircraft.

As a wall piece, the appeal is the imbalance. Everything built sits east of 18/36: a stepped run of hangar and building blocks trailing down the apron edge, a broad ramp at the top, and one thin taxiway line that reaches far out to the right and gives the composition its width. The airport lies seven miles east of Greenwood, the county seat of Leflore County, is owned by the City of Greenwood and Leflore County, and actually sits over the line in Carroll County. A national airport systems plan for 2011 through 2015 placed it in the general aviation category, and there are no scheduled airline flights. It hangs well beside a busier Delta neighbor such as Jackson, or a freight-heavy field like Memphis, where the drawn shapes get denser and this one stays open.
