Greenville Mid-Delta Airport Runway Diagram Print

Greenville Mid-Delta Airport works two parallel runways, and the print is essentially two long vertical strips with open ground between them: 18L/36R at 8,001 by 150 feet, with 18R/36L at 7,019 by 150 feet set well to the west of it. Both point north and south, they end on the same line at the bottom of the pair, and the longer strip carries further north at its top end, which is the one asymmetry in an otherwise matched set. Field elevation is 131 feet above sea level and magnetic variation is 1W, so the plotted headings sit close to square with true north. Between the two strips, low in the frame, a pair of taxiway legs crosses in a wide X, and the terminal and apron mass gathers off to one side, so the linework has weight on the left and open pavement on the right.

The field started as a military one. A United States Army Air Corps site selection board picked Greenville in February 1940, and the Air Corps activated Greenville Army Airfield that August, two months after construction began on a 2,000 acre, 140 building site. The first aircraft arrived on 5 November, and between 24 January 1942 and 15 January 1944, 5,705 aviation cadets graduated from the basic flying school there. After the war the airfield became a storage depot for B-24 Liberators returning from the Eighth and Fifteenth Air Forces, and it was inactivated on 22 July 1946. Air Training Command brought it back on 1 December 1950 for Korean War pilot training, redesignated it Greenville Air Force Base in 1953 for basic single engine training on T-28 Trojans, added T-33 Shooting Stars in 1955, and returned the military portion of the field to full civilian control on 27 December 1966.

The civil airport inherited a serious timetable. Southern Airways was working the field with Martin 4-0-4 propliners by 1968, six departures a day, three of them nonstop to Memphis. Douglas DC-9 jets followed, and a July 1978 Southern timetable listed a daily jet to Jackson that carried on from there to Atlanta. Southern merged into Republic Airlines, which had pulled out of Greenville by 1986. The airport sits in the Mississippi Delta, in unincorporated Washington County, and is owned by the city whose name it bears.

As art, the plan is left to speak plainly. Runway designators, lengths and widths follow the published figures, and taxiways, apron edges and the terminal block are reduced to flat geometry over the ground tone you choose.
