Grayling AAF Runway Diagram Print

Grayling AAF draws as two long runways that meet close to their western ends, so the print reads as a wide V opening toward the east with two short stubs behind the crossing. Runway 14/32 is the longer of the pair at 5,005 by 150 feet with an asphalt surface, and it runs from the 14 threshold at upper left down to 32 at lower right. Runway 05/23 is 5,000 by 150 feet on concrete, climbing from the 5 end just below the intersection out to 23 at the top right. Because the two lengths are within a few feet of each other, neither leg dominates: the shape stays balanced on the wall instead of tipping to one side.

The field sits at 1,158 feet above sea level in Crawford County, Michigan, about one nautical mile northwest of downtown Grayling and roughly 7 miles northeast of the main cantonment area of Camp Grayling. Its history is written into the geometry. The airport was constructed between 1927 and 1929 for the National Guard Air Squadron of Detroit, the runways were hard surfaced in 1933, and the whole field was turned over to the federal government for military use during World War II, when it was known for a time as McNamara Field. In 2020 the Michigan National Guard unveiled the National All-Domain Warfighting Center here. One local quirk that explains the two different surfaces: runway 5/23 and taxiways A, D and E close through the winter months because those surfaces get no snow removal.
