The field itself

This is Mesa's own layout, the way its runways run and the taxiways thread between them, composed into a print you will want to look at every day. Not a stock template with a new name on it.

Museum-quality cotton paper

Heavyweight 330 gsm, 100% cotton Hot Press paper, acid-free and archival-grade. Its high color gamut and black density give the runways real depth, and pigment inks keep the fine detail crisp on a smooth matte surface.

Solid wood framing or glossy metal

Frame it in 1.25 inch solid wood, black, white or natural oak, with the white beveled mat, optical-grade clear acrylic and hanging wire included. Or choose glossy metal: dye sublimation into aluminum, floated about 3/4 inch off the wall on a hidden mount.

Falcon Field Runway Diagram Print

Falcon Field is a two runway field in Mesa, Arizona, and the print reads as a matched pair of black diagonals running from the lower left corner toward the upper right. The longer strip, 04R/22L, is 5100 ft by 100 ft. Its neighbor, 04L/22R, measures 3799 ft by 75 ft. Both are asphalt, both are labeled at their ends (4L and 4R at the bottom, 22R and 22L at the top), and the shorter one sits slightly above and behind the longer one so the two bars stagger rather than line up. Field elevation is 1394 ft, printed under the coordinates in the lower right.

The field opened as the No. 4 British Flying Training School after Southwest Airways, founded by Hollywood producer Leland Hayward and pilot Jack Connelly, set out to build a third Thunderbird field; the British asked that it be named for one of their birds. Royal Air Force cadets arrived in 1941 and trained on Stearman PT-17s and North American AT-6s, and the company's Thunderbird Field No. 2 became the site of the airport at Scottsdale. Since 1976 the field has been home to Airbase Arizona, a Commemorative Air Force unit whose aircraft include a flying B-17G called Sentimental Journey and a B-25J. In 2016 the World War II aviation hangars here were listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

As wall art, the appeal is the contrast between those two long clean strokes and the clutter around them. Taxiways loop between and around the runways, and the whole lower right quadrant fills with ranked hangar rows and tie down aprons, dozens of small parallel marks that give the composition its texture. Nothing crosses, nothing fans out; the geometry is one repeated angle, which is what makes it hang well in a hallway or above a desk where a busier field would fight the room. Depending on the colorway you choose, the runways either sit dark against a pale ground or glow out of a deep one.

Mesa (FFZ) print, common questions

How many runways does Falcon Field have?

Two, and both appear on the print. They are parallel asphalt runways, 04R/22L and 04L/22R, drawn as diagonal strips with their designators set at the ends.

How long are the runways at FFZ?

The longest is 04R/22L at 5100 ft long and 100 ft wide. The parallel runway 04L/22R is 3799 ft long and 75 ft wide. Both surfaces are asphalt.

Where is Falcon Field, and how high is it?

It is in Mesa, Arizona, in Maricopa County, at a field elevation of 1394 ft. The coordinates and the elevation are printed in the lower right of the print.

What does FFZ stand for?

FFZ is Falcon Field's three letter location identifier, and it is an unusual case: the airport's IATA code is MSC instead of a matching FFZ, where most US airports use the same three letters for both.

How accurate is the layout on this print?

It is plotted from published runway data for the airport, so runway positions, relative lengths and orientations follow the published layout. This is a print and not a navigation document, and fine details may be simplified or omitted. Pavement markings, lighting and signage are examples of what the drawing leaves out.

Does this work as a gift for a pilot who trained here?

Yes. Falcon Field is a training and general aviation field, so it is a common logbook airport, and the print is legible at a glance to anyone who has flown the 04/22 pair. Each one is made to order in your chosen size and in the colorway you choose.
