Cavern City Air Terminal Runway Diagram Print

Cavern City Air Terminal works four runways, which is a lot of pavement for a field this size, and the print plots each of them to scale. Runway 3/21 is the long strip at 7,854 feet by 150 feet. That runway count is a wartime inheritance. The field was activated as Carlsbad Army Airfield on October 12, 1942, first as an advanced twin engine training base and later as a bombardier school, where a cadet spent 12 to 18 weeks and dropped roughly 160 practice bombs, in daylight and after dark, from a Beech AT-11 Kansan. Hits and misses were recorded closely and the elimination rate ran 12 percent. The airfield closed on September 30, 1945, less than a month after the Japanese surrender, and passed into civilian hands. The city of Carlsbad owns the 1,980 acre airport now, five nautical miles southwest of downtown in Eddy County.

Scheduled flying goes a long way back here too. Continental began serving Carlsbad on May 14, 1940, and as of 2026 Contour Airlines connects the field to Albuquerque and Denver, with the service subsidized through the Essential Air Service program. The schedule is not what the diagram keeps.
